L’Arc~en~Ciel at Le Zénith May 9th 2008 NoLife report
French to English translation by Zel & Nanani
Voice off: L’Arc~en~Ciel, live at Le Zénith… If we had been told this just a couple of years ago, we would never have believed it. Yet, one of the most famous Japanese bands actually came to Paris, and they gave the French audience one of the best J-music shows it has been able to see to this day.
hyde: It all started in Osaka. Tetsu-kun, the leader, was looking for members, so he invited me to join. Yeah, that was the beginning… Um when was that again? I think it was 1992…
*silence*
hyde: … Wait no, it was 1991… *laugh* (Kis feledékeny, biztos a korral jár!!!

)
yukkie: *giggles*
Voice off: Laruku has been going on for 17 years, and they are among the very few Japanese bands who are relatively known in France. The eldest anime fans may remember with emotion “Blurry Eyes”, the opening of DNA², which marked a whole generation. Even though they made a lot of other anime openings, their success cannot be summarized by these anymore: they are now among the best ambassadors of what J-music has to offer.
yukkie: When it comes to music, at first I was rather into new wave. Then um… I liked punk as well.
hyde: Personally, I preferred heavy metal. I really loved it. But we are both from the same generation, so we had similar influences. While he was pretty obsessed with underground music, I was more like… Well, actually I hardly listen to music nowadays. It really doesn't do much for me anymore. I think I prefer to make it myself!
*DBB PV*
hyde: A long time ago, when I started writing lyrics, I actually started by drawing illustrations. I had been into drawing for a long time, so I tried to start by putting into pictures what I wanted to express with the songs. Then I tried to project myself within the pictures themselves, and they were usually quite simple. But now, it’s easier for me to type the lyrics directly on a computer, so I ended up dropping the illustration method.
Voice off: Their visit in Paris was long-awaited, and it certainly did not go unnoticed. For the occasion, even the main French media actually made the effort to come to their press conference.
ken: Can I speak frankly? We wanted to go to other European places too, at first… Like the Northern ones… Stockholm for example… We really considered a lot of cities, and then finally we were like “No no. It should be Paris.” *laugh* You're really going to translate that? “No no really it must be Paris!” Only Paris could work. We thought we might as well do couple of other shows in different places, but “NO NO, it should ONLY be Paris.” And that’s why it's only Paris for this time. All the other members were seriously into Paris only… Why was that anyway? Personally, I would have liked to have a tour around Europe, but he *points to hyde* said he only wanted to go to Paris.
hyde: I didn’t say I ONLY wanted Paris! I said that I wanted to GO to Paris!!!
ken: hmm…
hyde: … Well it’s true other places don't interest me much…
ken: You just don't care!
*everyone laugh*
hyde: … Sorry, but anyway, “L’Arc~en~Ciel” really fits Paris!
ken: Oh right, so after all he actually just REALLY wanted to go to Paris first. *laugh*
*Killing Me at le Zénith extract*
France 2 journalist: They dream of Tokio Hotel’s fame and they are actually on their way to catching up…
*websites of French media which covered the live are being shown. On Libération’s, major left-wing newspaper, extracts are being highlighted: how L'Arc was compared to Tokio Hotel or Indochine –a rather big French rock band- at its low points, or how L’Arc’s looks were ironically commented on (“they obviously share the same hairdressers”)*
Voice off: As we expected, the way the French media commented the event was ironical and made fun of them…
Voice off in TV report: “overloaded guitars, schmaltzy lyrics…”
Voice off: … Whichever media it may be, newspapers as well as TV, L’Arc~en~Ciel was not really taken seriously. But whatever! On May 9th at le Zénith, the audience knew very well that they were actually witnessing an historical event for Japanese Music in France.
hyde: um… So yeah, it’s the first time L’Arc~en~Ciel comes here… And tomorrow we are having the live… I don’t really know yet how the audience will react here, but I hope it will be something they"ll always remember.
*Driver’s High extract*

ÉS MÁR ITT IS ITT A TOKIO HOTEL!
